ADDRESSING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS THROUGH FOOTBALL

Innovative Sports Consultancy acts as the main consultation and delivery partner for the Premier League and British Council, together with UK and Kenya partners. Through this collaborative approach we are currently delivering a very innovative pilot programme using football to tackle issues of violence against women and girls in Western Kenya, Africa.

Building on the highly successful Premier Skills initiative and funded by the UK's Department for International Development (DFID), the Addressing Violence Against Women and Girl's Through Football works with young people in Mount Elgon and Kisumu regions, to address some of the behaviours and attitudes that give rise to high levels of violence against women and girls (VAWG).

Changing Lives in Kenya

Over the three year funding period, the programme will focus on adapting a similar Kicks style model run by Premier League Clubs to deliver regular weekly community football and educational sessions for young people in both regions of Kenya with the thematic focus of gender based violence.

Weekly football sessions offer inclusive opportunities to play engaging both males and females aged 10 - 20 years. The programme aims to use the municipal benefit of football actively to educate young people in a variety of different ways.

LET'S KICK OUT VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS

Through this process we have locally identified and are now currently training community coaches, teachers youth and social workers to become community inclusion football coaches addressing VAWG. Coaches get trained to address questions of gender, violence and conflict during football sessions which fundamentally gets reinforced in weekly workshops delivered on the thematic issue.

Alongside weekly football and educational sessions, the programme offers football tournaments and community events to raise awareness of the issues within the wider community.
